Tyler, The Creator - IGOR (2019)
IGOR - ★★★★★
Here comes my biggest review yet...
PART 1: Context
Discovering Tyler
Before
this, I had never listened to any album before this one. I know it
sounds hard to believe, but I mostly only listened to singles. One of my
favorite artists was always Tyler, The Creator, I discovered him when See You Again played
on the radio, and I immediately fell in love. I found his style very
unique because most of the rap that I had ever listened to before was
stuff like Lil Pump.
Why I Tuned In
When I saw IGOR come
out, I thought "sure, why not?" since everyone was saying it was so
good. I barely even knew how to listen to an album (I initially thought
you were supposed to spread it out between various days, lol. I was
genuinely surprised when I was able to finish it in one day), but I did
it, and, until weeks ago, it was my favorite album of all time, and it's
still in 2nd place for a reason.
How It Led Music To Become My Hobby
Before IGOR,
I thought of music as a kind of way to either relax, or to cheer up. I
never thought of it as a real self expression of any kind, before I
listened to this album. After IGOR, I started listening to more
of Tyler's discography, and later Kendrick Lamar, and later more rappers
and later R&B artists, and my horizons kept expanding to the point I
am now. I'm not going to lie, AOTY helped me a lot in discovering new
music genres and opinions. I don't even remember how I found this site,
but I'm glad to be sharing my reviews on here (or if you are in my blog,
hi (: lol)
PART 2: Album Review
The album starts on an amazing note with IGOR'S THEME,
and while it may not be the biggest lyrical masterpiece, it's still
absolutely amazing in its production. It has such great production, in
fact, that I might consider it one of my favorites from the album.
EARFQUAKE follows up on another high note, and I THINK has both the production qualities of IGOR'S THEME along with lyricism. If you're on streaming, you get EXACTLY WHAT YOU RUN FROM YOU END UP CHASING,
which is an interlude, but if you're on a physical version, or on a
shady Spotify playlist with a "podcast episode," you will get BOYFRIEND, which is one of my favorite Tyler songs ever.
RUNNING OUT OF TIME may
be one of the weakest points on the album, but it would still be a high
note for most albums, with its slow yet beautiful production and great
metaphors.
NEW MAGIC WAND follows up with some hype, great production and intense (at least for IGOR) themes in the lyrics. A BOY IS A GUN* is one of my favorites from the album, with its amazing sample, beautiful production, and meaningful lyricism. PUPPET used
to be one of my least favorites from the album, but looking back, it's
pretty good, I love the Kanye feature and the overall atmosphere.
WHAT'S GOOD used to be my favorite from the album, but looking back, it's one of the weakest from the album, even if, just like RUNNING OUT OF TIME, it's still great.
I could talk for hours about GONE, GONE / THANK YOU but that's why I have the track reviews section on this review lol. I DON'T LOVE YOU ANYMORE
follows with the weakest point on the album, with some high points, but
mostly feels weaker than the rest of the album ever gets close to, even
though it's still nice and atmospheric.
ARE WE STILL FRIENDS? is an amazing outro, the screams feel authentic, the atmosphere is there, Pharrell's feature is amazing, but sometimes, it feels like the production could be better.
PART 3: Track Reviews
EARFQUAKE - ★★★★★
I love this song so much. It was one of the last songs from Tyler I listened to before listening to the full IGOR.
A beautiful atmospheric journey, with great (although oftentimes
repetitive) lyrics and excellent production. While I have no idea what
he's saying, I still like Playboi Carti's feature, and think it adds
charm to the song, although it may not be totally necessary.
NEW MAGIC WAND - ★★★★☆
I am very conflicted about this song, I'm in between putting it at ★★★☆☆ and at ★★★★★, which is why I'm putting it at ★★★★☆,
a solid middle ground. Some days, I feel like this song is amazing, but
other days, I'm just not in the mood. I used to listen to this song too
much, which is probably why I feel kind of sick of it.
GONE, GONE, THANK YOU - ★★★★★
This
is one of my favorite songs of all time, and absolutely my favorite
Tyler song of all time. The features (although I'm not too sure who they
are and I can't find any details on the internet, please comment if you
know!) are amazing on GONE, GONE, and then the whole song switches up into THANK YOU,
which is absolutely incredible, with incredible production, incredible
atmosphere, incredible lyrics, it's, in general, just incredible.
